FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

 


Scope

 

 

The Conference aims at providing a forum for exchanging and disseminating scientific environmental and socio-economic knowledge, experiences and achievements, obtained within the framework of activities devoted to regional sustainability, preservation, management and protection of the Black Sea/Mediterranean ecosystem and its natural resources. Initiated by EU/CESUM-BS Project (5th FP), the main scope of the Conference is to define a strategy in support of the sustainable development and management of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions. The Conference will be followed by a FORUM on the EU/ESA initiative on the “Global Monitoring for Environment and Security”.

 

 

 

Objectives

 

 

Ψ   to provide the opportunity to the scientific community, as well as, to administrators, managers, policy makers and others to meet and discuss their experiences and achievements in order to enhance cooperation towards an improved development and management of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions.

Ψ   to enhance the interface between research and policy for a most effective usage of scientific results.

Ψ   to improve the capabilities, at the service of environmental and socio-economics needs, of the Centres of Excellence within the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions.

Venue

 

The Conference will be held at Varna, under the auspices of the Institute of Oceanology (EU Centre of Excellence) of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), from 13 to 18 October 2003. There are direct flights to Sofia from many major cities. The Conference participants arriving at the Sofia Airport, having announced the date and number of their flights, will be welcome by a person with the sign-board IO-BAS, who will refer them to the domestic flights terminal. Varna is easily accessible also from Sofia, by train or bus (regular or specially arranged).

 

 

Language

 

The official Conference language will be English. No translation will be provided

 

 

Structure

 

The Conference will consist of plenary, special and poster sessions. An event will be devoted to IO-BAS, Varna 30 years Anniversary. Also a half day Meeting of the Forum on the EU/ESA iniative on the “Global Monitoring for the Environment and Security” (GMES) will take place. The plenary session will include the general audience and serve for discussions. Each oral presentation will not exceed 20 minutes in duration, including time for questions after each presentation. For each poster, one numbered board will be reserved. The dimensions of each poster should not exceed 150 cm in height and 80 cm in width.

 

 

Output

 

The planned output of the Conference will be: (i) an Abstracts Volume; (ii) a Report addressing scientific knowledge and research needs, specifically for sustainable development of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean regions; (iii) a publication of selected Conference papers in a special issue of an International Journal, and (iv) a Report from the EU/ESA “GMES” Forum.

 


Registration

 

Participants wishing to attend the Conference must be registered and pay registration fee. The registration fee is 100 EURO and for students 50 EURO. This covers:

 

Ψ      Meeting Programme and Abstracts Volume.

Ψ      Attendance to all scientific sessions.

Ψ      Admission to exhibitions.

Ψ      Conference Documentation.

Ψ      Coffee/refreshments service during breaks.

Ψ      Evening reception on 13.10.2003.

Ψ      Conference Dinner on 16.10.2003.

Ψ      One-day excursion on 18.10.2003.

 

The registration fee for accompanying persons is 25 EURO; this includes the participation in the evening reception, the Conference Dinner and the excursion.

 

The participation of a limited number of participants, especially from developing countries, will be financially supported by the organizers. However, due to financial constraints it would be appreciated if interested participants consider the possibility of funding their participation from other sources than the organizing Committee or by sharing the costs. The selection of the participants of the Conference will be made by the members of the Organizing Committee in consultation with members of the International Scientific Advisory Committee.

 

 

Call for Papers

 

The Conference is open to all scientists, as well as, to administrators, managers, policy makers and others, who would like to present paper(s) and participate in the discussions. All participants who wish to present paper(s) are requested to submit their abstracts to the Conference Secretariat together with a filled Pre-registration Form, not later than March 15st, 2003. Abstracts submissions should be made by electronic means (ASCII text file or word document) in English. The abstracts should be single-spaced, fully justified in 11 point Times New Roman or similar font and the titles must be in bold and capital letters. The text must not exceed three pages. The name of the author presenting the paper should be underlined. The organizers together with members of the International Scientific Advisory Committee will review all abstracts. The basis for acceptance of an abstract will be relevance of the paper to the Conference topics, concentration on precise research results and the scientific quality. In the abstracts, authors should state the scientific objectives and context of their work, a summary of the results and the main conclusions (no figures, tables, references!). Project overviews will not be considered. Acceptance notifications of the contributions will be sent in early June 2003.
