The 5th MAMA Meeting was held in Malta from the 27th to 30th January 2004The 5th meeting of the Mediterranean network to Assess and upgrade the Monitoring and forecasting Activity in the region (MAMA) project was held in Malta from the 27th to 30th January 2004. In this meeting, the work conducted during the fourth six-month period of the project was reported and assessed in detail. There were dedicated session for each workpackage in which the WP leaders reported on the progress in their activities, discussed important scientific topics as well as finalised a schedule for the 25-36 month period. During this MAMA meeting three additional events marked important project milestones. These consisted of:
A half-day Seminar Trends in Marine Research and related developments – a challenge for Malta and its role in the Mediterranean,
was also held in conjunction with the 5th MAMA meeting. The seminar gave an overview on the key issues and trends in Malta concerning marine research and related developments in marine affairs, within the context of international drivers, and with a viewpoint on the potential role of our country in the Mediterranean. Serving as a marine forum for sharing, amalgamating and concretising ideas as well as for synergising initiatives, the seminar produced important insights on the pace of research and innovation needed to gear our marine sector towards a viable future, on some key emerging and prospective opportunities, and on the best strategy to reach set goals. The seminar also addressed Malta's needs to establish its marine environmental monitoring programme including a coastal sea operational observing system to fully comply to its environmental obligations as a new EU member. http://www.capemalta.net/medgoos/meetings/malta/
