MeDir-OP is a regional directory of key institutions, centres and agencies in the Mediterranean that deal with the monitoring of the marine environment or underpin research for operational oceanography. The institutions in MeDir-OP are:

operational oceanography agencies

marine research institutions relevant to ocean monitoring

oceanographic data centres

providers of operational marine services.

Information is also provided on potential users of marine data, on key public administration/authorities responsible for marine affairs, and for environmental policy formulation and implementation, and on the relevance of the maritime sector in the economic activities of Mediterranean countries.

Furthermore MeDir-OP gives information on routine marine monitoring activities including the type of observing platforms, instrumentation, measured parameters, method of measurement, data processing and analysis, dissemination of related products, and other relevant details.

The information in this directory has been acquired by questionnaires and dedicated surveys conducted within the MedGOOS/MAMA project. The information is mainly presented in the form of maps and a user-friendly graphical interface that allows easy viewing of the metadata according to categories. It also contains specific information sets collated in searchable mini-databases.

MeDir-OP complements the Mediterranean directory (MeDir) on individual experts and scientists involved in marine research initiatives in the region. The MeDir database is also maintained by the MedGOOS Secretariat in Malta in collaboration with the IOC/IODE Secretariat.
