MAMA Consortium

International Advisory Board

The MAMA consortium consisted of 31 partners from all the riparian countries in the Mediterranean region. The partners are major national marine research organizations, academies, agencies in charge of environmental management, intergovernmental organizations – IOC/UNESCO and UNEP/MAP, a Non-Governmental Organization, an interagency organization - EuroGOOS.

Each member of the consortium had a specific role related to its scientific/technical expertise, regional location, facilities, linkage with related national/international RTD initiatives and stakeholders. Thus the network had the proper critical mass, scientific and technical expertise, and geographical coverage. The co-ordinating institute was the International Marine Centre in Sardinia, Italy, which has a sound experience of managing large projects. The MedGOOS Secretariat at the IOI-Malta Operational Centre within the University of Malta supported the coordination and the communication between the MAMA partners; it had the responsibility to organize general meetings and to disseminate the project activities.

 The activities of MAMA were organized into nine interwined workpackages (WPs) 

Each WP leader

(i) managed the progress of the WP by giving direction, identifying weak points, and solving problems
(ii) prepared and conducted WP meetings and prepared the 6 months WP reports

The project management and co-ordination was supported by a sound decision making structure to ensure integrity, adherence to project goals, efficient day to day running. Consensus on objectives, methodologies and actions are the supporting basis of MAMA. The MAMA decision making structure includes :

- The Co-ordinator (CNR Silvana Vallerga, MedGOOS Chair & I-GOOS Chair), the Assistant Co-ordinator (IOI-MOC
  Aldo Drago, MedGOOS Secretariat)
- Project Team, composed by Co-ordinator, Assistant Co-ordinator, WPs leaders, EC representative, and APAT to
  represent the stakeholders
- Full Group Committee participated by all project members
- Advisory Board of distinguished senior scientists

A more detailed description of each of these components is as follows :

- carried the technical and scientific responsibility for the execution of the project
- co-ordinated the activities of the different groups
- prepared the workpackage reports

  Advisory Board made up of four distinguished senior scientists to:

- advised on the scientific and technical quality of the work carried out
- assisted the Project Team in the evaluation of the project
- promoted the links of MAMA with national authorities
- ensured coherence of the network activities with the global strategy of the GOOS
- ensured links and benefits from related global and regional activities
